Ice fishing is fun, but safety always comes first. Before you drill holes and tie on your tungsten ice jig or tungsten rain drop ice jig, learn these basic rules.
First rule: never fish alone. Always tell a friend or family member your lake location and return time. Check ice thickness carefully. As a general rule, 4 inches of clear solid ice is the minimum safe thickness for walking. White, snow-covered ice is weaker, and areas near inlets, springs and docks always have thin ice. Test ice ahead of you with a spud bar.
Bring essential safety gear: ice picks around your neck, a life jacket, safety rope and warm waterproof clothes. Turn back immediately if you hear ice cracking or find slushy weak ice. Remember: no ice is ever 100% safe.
